Factual TV
In this written report i am going to talk about the codes and conventions that are used in a factual TV production. I am going to talk about the effects of each conventions and why its used, how the conventions inform the audience and how the conventions effect the shows Realism. I will refer to other documentaries to identify the common codes and conventions.
The documentary i have chosen to analyse is 'The Ghost Village' by Tim Daly. This documentary is about six artists who have a found an abandoned village in the west of scotland and how they are going to transform it into an open-air art gallery. The documentary is an observational format so we can view the journey the artist and location have taken.
Voice over/Presenter.
To start the documentary they had a vocie over taken from the first interview while showing shot of the location that the documentary is taking place, the voice over also sets the tone of the documentary and how it is going to be presented to the audience. The vocie over is also as if the person been interview is taking directs towards you and is informing you of what is happening.
Editing, Piecing together to make meaning
The style of the documentary has been edited together to be like a journey and a build up to how the village is going to look after the village is going to be complete, this adds structure to the narrative and help the interviews to be ordered correctly.
Presentation of facts
Although it is a documentary about graffiti artists and how they are changing a village it still offers facts about the location and this informs the audience more. after the first minute of the documentary the facs start to pop up on the screen after some interviews is is structured like this to give more realism to the documentary and facts are a good way to give the documentary more believability. The use of facts is presented on the screen is a quick and cheap way of presenting infomation to the audience.
Interviews
Interviews have been used through out this documentary with the artists that it revolves around to express the reason behind narrative and to authenticate the views in the documentary it also gives the audience a more indepth view into why these artists have decided to do this project and what it is about the location they have chosen for this.
Archive film and photographs
Archive footage has been shot on location of the artists work, rather than using the camera to catch a shot of the graffiti with the grass moving in the wind they have decided to take photos of the work and edited the photos after to add effects such as panning across the photo or zooming in slowly., these are common effects that are used when presenting archive footage.
